Lancaster Moor Asylum (External Pics Only) Location - Quenmore Road, Lancaster, Lancashire. Architects - Thomas Standen (1816) AV Kershaw (1882). Asylum Layout Design - Early Corridor Plan. Alternative Names - Lancaster Asylum, Moor Hospital and Ridge Lea Hospital. The County Lunatic Asylum on Lancaster Moor opened in 1816, and since enlarged. It is a stately quadrangular building of stone, with a handsome front, relieved by pillars of the Doric order. The hospital held approximatley 2,400 patients (Circa 1913). It was then carried on to become the main NHS A&E department for Lancaster up until 1999. The annexe was completed in 1882 at a cost of £125,000, and occupies an area of about 41 acres. The buildings are constructed of stone, and over the main entrance is a spectacular clock tower of about 100 feet in height. There are also smaller ones at the front extremity of each wing.
